Good day to everyone!

I just have an inquiry regarding boiler water treatment.

Our boiler water treatment uses residual phosphate treatment (Na3PO4) along with polymer injection (as a dispersant and cycles of concentration indicator).

Recently, we experienced discoloration (reddish) and haziness of our boiler water samples. This coincided with the build up of polymer levels (from ~40 ppm to 80ppm) in our boiler due to decrease in blowdown.

After discovering this, we opted to decrease polymer injection at our boilerfeed water treatment and increased blowdown to decrease the polymer concentrations back to normal. However, the dicoloration and turbidity continued even at normal or even low polymer levels.

With this, we decided to completely decommission our polymer injection pump to reduce the concentration to zero. Currently, we now acquire clear boiler water samples with acceptable turbidity values at zero polymer concentration at our boiler water.

We are now looking into eliminating our polymer injection chemicals to avoid the discoloration (which may possibly indicate accelerated corrosion) and to cut our operating expenses.


Is it possible to operate our boiler efficiently and safely without the polymer injection chemicals?




Additional info: our boilers are running at 600 psig. Boiler feed water hardness are kept at 0.2ppm max. Boiler water conductivity is maintained at 750 uS/cm max.
