Hi

Is there any standard for specifying opening and closing time of MOV? Is time specified by process engineer?

Regards

Himant

A compressor kickback valve will typically require a faster response than a battery limits block valve. The details of MOV specification usually fall to the intrumentation engineer who should be familiar with vendor offerings. But the process engineer can set requirements where there is a concern. Engineering at its best is a collaborative effort.

I've encountered requirements of MOV opening and closing time that's attributed to some process requirements. But normally, I don't specify MOV open/close times.

Surge studies (e.g. loading / unloading facilities or tankage) to determine closing times of MOV's are often done by process engineers.

Hi

Thank you all for putting in your inputs!

I totally agree that surge study is to be done to decide time of MOV.

But I was actually looking for some standards.

Is it true like for battery limit valves, we can specify 2s/1'' opening and closing time? Like for 10'' valve, 20 s is sufficient?

Dear Himant,

If you asking for the standard then there is no standard for the opening & closing time.

This is thumb rule & some extent assumption is correct also. Which kind of valve ? I hope it is a ball valve.

You need to specify opening & closing time exactly as this will impact the motor actuator sizing.

Jatin

Himant,

As jatin rightly stated, you need to specify the valve stroking time from "FO" position to "FC" position as per the process requirements (no specific standard available) in relevant MOV data sheet.
