Before using a fusible plug, consider the objective of your design. What are you trying to accomplish? The fusible plug is, of course, a non-reclosing device, activated only by fire. If the objective is to prevent the tank from overpressuring during a fire, then emptying it on the ground (thru the open fusible plug) is probably worse than risking tank failure.

When applied properly, fusible plugs can be used as a layer of protection during fire exposure, but understand that they're not a substitute for a relief device. that is, they don't satisfy the code requirements for a relief device. There are no pressure vessel or tank codes that recognize fusible plugs as a relief device.
