Experts,

I am currently working on a Gas Plant which involves Propane Refrigeration system.

What is the normally practised material of construction for propane refrigeration system?

It can see -40 deg C at atmospheric pressure, does that mean we need to specify Low Temperature Carbon steel for this service.

one more aspect of this is that the lowest temperature of -40 deg C is coincidental with the atmospheric pressure so, Carbon steel can also do?

What is your recommendation?

Thanks and Regards,

Dear popular carbon steel such as st37 can't endurance under zero degree centigrad but carbon steel such as sg255 can endurance.I proposed if you can use stainless steel because in cryogenic its very important to use proper material.

For propane refrigeration systems, carbon steel is perfectly acceptable.  No need to use stainless steel as cryogenic temperatures are usualyy not an issue.  Reg temp carbon steel is good to -29C while low temp carbon steel is good to -45C.  For refrig units I have designed, SA-516-70N is typical for vessels, SA-106B for piping down to -29C MDMT and SA-333-6 for piping down to -45C.

Cheers,

Colin
