Out of 909.6 ton/day of anhydrous ammonia I produce, 400 ton/day will be sent through a 3km pipeline to storage and outloading facility where is will be dispatched in trains of rail tankers that arrive once per week.These rail tankers are pressure tanks that each hold 50 tons of liquid ammonia at ambient temperature.

The remaining ammonia production is piped directly to a nitric acid plant across the fence from my ammonia plant. This plant (nitric acid) handles its own storage requirements, so i don't consider them at this point.

I wanted to use low pressure storage (refrigerated), Currently I'm busy estimating my storage tanks on how big they will be using heuristics.

However i do not understand properly how the bullets work (high pressure storage) and if it is feasible and economical to employ such kind of storage facility with the amount i'm producing.

Thank you for help and advice,

Molefe,

Molefe:

I am attaching some literature regarding ammonia liquid storage, handling, and transport.

Please study and digest this information, using it to correlate with what you need to do on your project.  The answer(s) to your query should be contained within this information.

I hope this helps you (and other Forum members) in better understanding the way ammonia liquid is stored, handled, and transported using its own properties to aid in the operations.

Molefe:

And thank you for your comments.  Don't ever forget:

  1. always ask questions.  There is no such thing as a stupid question; but there are stupid answers.
  2. Remember: we old timers have been there before and stood in the same trying and difficult situations;
  3. Any senior engineer who takes the time to respond to your questions is doing so only because he/she cares about you and the trials you are going through.  That is the spirit of our Student Forum and I hope it continues on like that.  The world needs more engineers; but those engineers must be capable and well-trained as well as ambitious and professional in the way they serve society with their ingenuity and resolution of problems.
