Does anyone know what are the applicable standards or any relevant documents / books in this regard? A discussion came up at work, not directly related to our plant, but in response to  some news about a large fire when someone accidentally struck an underground large diameter natural gas pipeline near our facility.

I was just curious what are the codes or professional protocols while responding to such an event. In particular I was looking for guidance on both, prevention by design as well as response protocols.

Any pointers? A google search wasn't very fruitful, perhaps I didn't have the right keywords.

I do not know any standard on this. But by logic, If that happen, the nat gas pipeline operator shall isolate the pipeline, downstream and upstream the leakage and depressurize the inventory between the isolations. We cannot firefight a gas fire especially on burried pipeline. most of the case we depressurize the inventory and let the fire extinguished by running out of fuel.

If you are working in a natural gas or any plant, there should be emergency response diaster management plan.It shows how to react to different type of scenarios. If you not aware you can look up for this in your plant. If it is not followed in your plant.Search in google emergency response plan.
