Something thats been puzlling me and is a bit outside of my experience is when you have an electric motor and a steam turbine on the same drive shaft, and the steam turbine is used for startup before for example a flue gas expander and the motor/generator take over, as is the case on an FCC power recovery train. Does the fact that you start up on the steam turbine avoid the large surge in power required to start the motor? And secondly is the motor typically sized to take the full load in the case where you just have the expander and motor with no steam turbine?
