Hi

My name is jade Kim, a process engineer working for Saudi Arabia project.

My plant have Naphtha storage tank designed with external floating tank.

During tank maintenance, we use the tank heel pump for removing the remaining liquid below low low

liquid level.

The problem is that the roof will be stopped by support leg, and the liquid will be pumped out.

Thus, vapor space will be made, and air will be sucked for preventing from vacuum by PVSV.

As the storage material is Naphtha, the flammable mixture will be made.

Thus, my client want to intall nitrogen blanketing system for tank maintenance.

But, I think this is too strange about installing nitrogen blanketing system in floating roof tank.

Please tell me your experience about the maintenance method of floating tank stored with flammable liquid when the tank should be emptied.

Thank you.

Hi,

As far as i know the external floating roof tanks containing flammable fluids shouldn't be taken off-float except when they are to be emptied for repair or maintenance and to be out of service. Then it couldn't be a normal situation and will be managed by respecting safety precautions and applying a restriction on visiting the tank roof as long as the roof is landed. It will be purged with nitrogen for required repair and maintenance...
