I have a cone roof  diesel storage tank fire protection system proposal,.... with only fire hydrants used as means of fire protection system i was wondering :

  • since you need to apply cooling water per NFPA  on adjacent tanks ... shouldnot it be done through fire monitors instead of hydrants (dont want any sprinklers as its not the preference of client)
  • is coverage from two sides neceessary ... i only need 500 gpm application should i use two monitors in opp directions of tank
  • in case only hydrant is used .. fire fighters would have to stand there all the time with Hose..... instead of being able to direct a fire monitor and move back

Since you are using water, only, you will want to make that water as efficient as possible using a wetting agent.  Breaking down the surface tension of the water will allow the water to absorb the heat and keep the adjacent tanks cool.  This is done in the oil fields in Texas where they use the wetting agent to knock down the flammable liquids (Class B fire and, at the same time, keep the other tanks cooled down to keep them from igniting.  This is pretty straight forward and can be done for relatively little cost...   Use of a fire monitor is fine, you will just need to have an eductor that can be set to deliver the wetting agent at the correct percentage.  Not all wetting agents are created equal so you will need to find the best one for your purpose.  This can also be done using a 1.5 inch line and, as you say, will require someone to stand there and actually apply the water.
