Hello,

I'm currently designing a reactor for the following reaction to take place.

Butyric acid (l) + Hydrogen (g -> l) -> Butanol (l) + Water (l)

As it is a high pressure hydrogenation process, I would assume that the hydrogen is soluble in water (as my reaction have excess water in the inlet) and this will be a liquid phase reaction.

I would want to know whether shell and tube reactor are suitable for this? As I see most of the shell and tube reactor is for gas phase, but I'm not sure whether it is applicable for liquid phase or not.

Thanks in advance.
