Hi guys, I am currently going to design a distillation column to separate acetone from acetone- butanol-ethanol-water mixture. I am going to do a vigorous design and I want to know from anyone or any experts in simulation of these two software pro II and HYSYS whether which one is better in terms to doing vigorous and detailed design of this distillation process I am going to carry out. Also, is it possible to design in detail the pumps required as well? I have some knowledge on HYSYS taught by the university but not very sure how pro II is going to work out. Is it going to be more effective than HYSYS? Thanks in advance.

most probably you can solve the column (from a thermodynamic point of view)
with both these simulators (as well as others) and obtain equivalent
results, due to the cost of licences usually there is only one software available,
you are fortunate to have two alternatives :-)

Did you make simple tests of your system on the two simulators? For instance, did you check the formation of azeotropes?
If one of the two is more accurate, your choice is done. Otherwise, take into account that the use of PRO-II will require you a lot of additional time to read the results.
There are other aspects to evaluate but you should exactly explain your scope of work.
You can't have the detail design of any pump from a simulator.
By the way, what is a "vigorous" design? (sorry for my lack of knowledge).

I think that you can build in the one of your choice, and run the model in both.

Thanks for the reply bro. Yea, I've checked the formation of azeotropes using aspen properties and acetone would not form azeotropes with the rest of the components and my job is to design that column which is to separate acetone from the mixture. Sorry for being vague but vigorous meaning I have to get the optimum number of stages also noting the design and configuration in the condenser and rebolier involved in the distillation column. I have to do costings as well and also determine the packings used and type of baffles used in this distillation column as well.

Thanks for all the replies bros, I still haven try out pro II. But I know for HYSYS, we can export the streams including mass and energy data to excel is is very useful for me to collate all the information for my distillation column design. I am not sure if Pro II does that easier. It did seem user-friendly to me though. If it takes a long time to collate my data, I've spend much time on it since I 've to calculate manual costings as well. Thanks in advance!
