Hi There,

I am working on a project using Therminol 59 as heating medium. The plant is located in Canada with minimum ambient temperature -25°C. Based on therminol 59 product bulletin, it is pumpable until -40°C. Its pour point is -60°C.

Is heat tracing required for winterization?

Thank you.

Best regards,

Leo

Leo,

As per your data, it seems, it is not required. However, you have to check your design basis and whether your value -25°C is average minimum or lowest possible minimum value. In design basis, basis for winterization must have clearly stated. In addition, you can also contact Therminol vendor to cross-check. They can provide you catlog in which optimum use range has been given.

Leo,

Appears doesn't require to heat tracing, because on one hand the pumpable temperature is well abaove the pour point and on the other hand minimum ambient temperature is well above the pumpable temperature, but you should follow what has already been specified in the relevant winterization specification...

We specifically use Therminol 59 in cold climates because of its cold startup properties/pumpability.  No heat tracing is required, just make sure you size the pump motor based on cold startup conditions as the current/hp will be higher when pumping the thicker fluid at low temperature.

Thank you all for your inputs. -25 °C is the extreme low ambient temperature. For now I have decided no heat tracing and wait for client comments.

Best regards,

Leo
