Hi can anyone suggest me method to design pressure vessel heads (bottom dish) for external pressure when there is stiffening on the head. the stiffening is proided by the limpet that is used for heating the material inside the reactor. i have the formula for designing without the stiffeners bbut i want to know how to design when stiffeners are present. Thanks in advance

Unless you are an experienced Mechanical Engineer, I would not undertake what you are proposing to do. But you post this in the Student Forum, so I have to assume you are only trying to say that you intend to do a calculation exercise for academic purposes - like homework.

Go to the following Website and you will find free Spreadsheet software for designing the mechanical components of process vessels:

http://www.pveng.com/index.htm

http://www.pveng.com...Heads/Heads.htm

http://www.pveng.com/Soft/Soft.htm

I hope this helps you out.

No my dear friend it is not a homework. it is a real problem. actually i was not getting any design procedure in literature for the external pressure on head with limpet or stiffening rings. but now i have contacted some other people around in that field and got some useful information. the idea is that whenever there is a limpet, you dont go for designing under external pressure more than 1 kg/cm², throughout the shell length and the dished heads. u design the head as usual for the external pressure as per procedure in Pressure vessel handbook by Eugene F. Megyesey.
Plz reply if u feel i am wrong.

got exact method for limpet desing. u desing for half pipe jacket with the external pressure on that length of one limpeted length of shell with pressure of limpet + 1.

@Guest:
That was one whole design method in a single sentence! Could you please give the info in more detail, along with some references. I feel that the design mentioned by you is going to be very useful to me. Thanks a lot.

@Art:
I think the above software does not address cases of heads under external pressure and, especially, stiffening. Any other online resources, please? Thanks.
