Hello Fellow Chemical Engineers,

I am thinking of getting a PE license in Texas. For now, I cannot think of any usage of it. Does it worth of the efforts to get a PE license? I am a process designer in an Engineering and Construction Firm in Texas. Only a couple of my cowokers have that.

Would you please give me your two cents if you are a licensed chemical engineer?

Thanks.

Regards,

Leo

I have worked as a process engineer in Texas since 1966, about half the time with EPC firms. I never registered, and never needed to. You can spend the time you would otherwise attend useless seminars and such to fulfill yearly requirements pursuing more useful endevors.

Bobby,

Thank you very much. Any advantages in securing or finding a job? When I looked at the qualifications of jobs posted, I saw something like "PE is a plus or PE desirable"

Well, if you think it will help you, then get it. If you later find it unnecessary, then you can drop it.

Like Bobby, I have been a ChE for a long time, since 1979.  In fact, it is 35 years tomorrow!  I have never felt the need for a PE working directly for a chemical company.  In fact, I have heard other ChE's describe it as being a liability, because if you have a PE you are more legally liable for your work.  I don't know if that is true or not, but it's what I heard round the water cooler.
