Hello Everyone,

Please suggest me that in case of major gas leak shall we go for ESD (Emergency Shutdown) or FSD (Fire Shutdown) of plant.

As far as my understanding goes in ESD we only do pressurized shutdown of plant, while in FSD we blow down whole inventory and fire water sprinkler system is activated in affected area.

So, according to me we shall only go for ESD as starting a fire water pump in case of gas leak can itself lead to fire, but some people suggest otherwise - that water can help to disperse gas and reduce concentration or cooling by water can prevent occurrence of fire.

Please suggest.

regards

Sanchit

Sanchit,

Any gas leak will be detected in Fire and Gas (F&G) Detection System. The F&G system will normally initiate some levels of the shutdowns via the ESD (Emergency Shutdown) system. Fire water pumps, on the other hand, will be actuated automatically from F&G system.

Thanks Fallah,

Actually I have to build F&G system logic and want to know that shall I initiate ESD or FSD during gas leak scenario.

As per my understanding its shall be only ESD.

Please confirm my understanding.

regards

Sanchit,

ESD will automatically be activated by the F&G system logic during gas leak scenario. Then FSD (i call it EDP; Emergency Depressurization ) will be initiated from ESD panels.
