I need to design scrubber system to treat chlorine gas coming from a chlor-alkali process with caustic solution to produce salt and sodium hypochlorite (and water). The scrubber will need to treat everyday continuous leaks from the process and also be able to handle a major emergency (the design standard is apparently 10 mins of full production). Because there is a reaction involved I'm unsure on whether to go to reactor design texts or absorption tower texts for the best information. Does anyone have any clues on the best place to start and/or know how you would factor in the continuous stream and the essentially batch process into the one system? Any replies would be appreciated,
Thanks

I think a scrubber type equipment is the best choice in this case.
The system will consist of a PP fan after the scrubber, the scrubber (made of PVDF, including packing material, preferably VSP type fillings)
and a recirculation pump. Note : use no rubber gaskets!
If you name the amount of chlorine to be washed out, I can give you some basic information.

I will also be happy to assist you with the design. Purafil specializes in the design of chlorine scrubbers throughout the world. We can custom build scrubbers to handle various amounts of chlorine within the system. The chlorine will be scrubbed using a dry activated alumina media and we discharge less than 25ppb.
We have manufactured chlorine scrubbers for passive applications all the way to emergency 3-ton releases. I will be more than happy to work along with CTS engineering and assist with your design. Also Dr. Krivanec is correct, once you determine the amount of chlorine to be scrubbed we can easily recommend a system. Please feel free to contact me if you need assistance.
