I have a problem.

Reactor is 3 KL

Reaction between A and B in solvent S

A and solvent are in the reactor filled with 50% of the reactor volume.

Heat of rxn is x cal/kg

3 kl reactor have 1.5 kl empty space. reaction at solvent S boiling temp.

no heat removal by jacket. scenario : condenser cooling failure.

Reactor design pr is 6 kg/cm2. and Rupture disc design pressure 2 kg/cm2

Problem: when cooling failure, how many kg of B is required to burst the rupture disc.

How to do this problem.

Ideal gas law we need to use.

Assume adiabatic.  Numerically (spreadsheet) initiate and progress the reaction with material and energy balance until mixture total pressure = RD burst pressure.

hi ,

To support your work , in addition to Latexman's reply , let you get a copy of :

"Chemical process safety , fundamentals with applications 3rd edition " by Daniel A Crowl and Joseph F Louvar .

Hope this is going to help you .

Thanks.

Mean I need calculate the pressure inside the vessel by heat generate from the exothermic reaction and the solvent is being boiled up.

with available empty space and caudate the p by ideal gas law?

am I correct?

Hello ,

To add to my previous email , consider reading the document attached . To me you are going to release a 2 phases mixture through the RD .

Hope this is helping you .

Breizh .
