Hello Everyone..

We have installed a new wet scrubber for SO2 control from process stream. During operation, we found foam formation in the scrubbing liquid.

What might me the reason for this?

Scrubbing solution is caustic 5 Litre of Lye (48%) with 700 Litre of pure water.

MOC (material of construction) of scrubber is Polypropylene, which reacts with NaOH at high temperature. However the temperature of liquid is around 30 degree celsius.

Initial pH of scrubbing solution was 12.5.

One more important thing is that the industry is soap manufacturing industry. I suspect that there might be a chance to get contaminated with other chemicals which causes foam formation.

Are there any other factors which causes foam formation in scrubbing solution. Can experienced persons please discuss about this?

Addition of defoamer will help to solve the problem?

Hi ,

To support , is it a permanent phenomena or just happening?

I experienced once foam in a storage tank of caustic soda , my guess at that time was a cross contamination from the tanker .

You may also experience contamination from other part of the plant  and water network may be responsible to bring contaminent !

Good luck

Breizh

Thank you very much sir..

Foam is coming intermittently. 4 times per day ( half an hour for each time)

We added defoamer in the scrubbing liquid. After 10 mins, the foam is again started to coming.
