I am supposed to design a wastewater treatment unit for a methanol plant. And I am not sure where to start and have no  idea of what type of wastewater a methanol plant would produce. And what are the basic wastewater treatment processes that would be required?

The first thing to do should be to characterize what is the wastewater that will be generated, and the quantity of it.

The treatment process is just a consequence of the generated wastewater.

What thorium90 is stating is that you should first do the complete, thorough engineering assignment given to you:

  • Search and research the related textbooks, journals, websites, and other engineering resources for a complete and detailed process description - complete with a PFD or, preferably, a P&ID of the methanol production process.
  • Study the process description thoroughly and determine where you have water streams going to waste, sewers, or possibly escaping as purges, leaks, and blow downs.
  • Identify the composition (or possible composition) of these waste water streams.
  • Develop a proposed procedure or process improvement on removing or treating the above fugitive waste water streams.

You have failed to identify WHAT methanol production process you are alluding to.  It is your responsibility to know exactly what you are talking or writing about.  If you were not originally given this information by your instructor, then you should insist on being given that information.  There are various methanol production processes.  It makes a BIG difference what particular methanol process you are dealing with.  You should know, using common horse sense, that it is impossible to identify the required basic waste water processes if you don't know what are the contaminants in the waste water.
