What is the maximum limit of fluid velocity in Heat exchanger tubes ? Can we go higher than 3.0 meter per sec ?

Hello,

It depends on pressure drop. Will the pressure drop have allowable value?

Regards

Hi Guys,

In the process of designing anew  Shell and Tube heat exchanger. We have the following considerations for the metallurgy and shell/tube side fluid allocation.  Currently Hot/tepid water on the shell side and cooling water on the tube side in Co-current flow.

I am thinking of the following

  1. Materials of Construction: The following materials of construction on the shell and tube side.

Shell Side : Carbon Steel and

Tube Side : Admiralty Brass/Copper/Stainless Steel

  1. Shell and Tube Side Fluid Allocation:

  1. Tube Side : Cooling Water ; Shell Side : Tepid water. Or Vice Versa.

The cooling water side is more fouling than the tepid water side and hence can go on the tube side but the tepid water is hotter at ~ 60 Deg (140 Deg F) with possibility of dissolved Air and is more corrosive. This makes me think if tepid water should go on the tube side instead of cooling water. The heat exchanger will be at least 30 long and is vertical with very less possibility of pulling the bundle for cleaning which makes think that fixed tube sheet exchanger is required. If a fixed tube sheet exchanger is designed then the more fouling cooling water should go on the tube side for the ease of cleaning with high pressure jet. But the problem of high corrosion on the shell side due to tepid water at 140 Deg F water remains.  We will have to provide additional corrosion allowance on the Shell plate for this.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks and Regards,

Pavan Kumar
