Hi,

I am working in a refinery in the alkylation plant which produces high octane gasoline by using sulfuric acid as a catalyst. For recovering the catalyst, the product is allowed to settle in the settler and then the acid and alkylate are separated but still some traces of acid are left in the product. In order to remove the remaining acid, it is passed through a caustic wash system where the acid is separated. But the problem is, foaming takes in the mixture which is regrading the quality of the gasoline.

I wanted to know what is this foaming and what are the possible reasons that this foaming takes place?

Thanks
