I work at an ammonium nitrate plant.  We produce ammonia, nitric acid and ammonium nitrate in solution.  My question is in regards to anhydrous ammonia storage (high pressure) and the methods of transferring ammonia to plants, such as our nitric acid and ammonium nitrate plant.  We pressure transfer ammonia from high pressure horizontal vessels (bullet shaped).  Each vessel has a 2 inch sch. 80 internal steam coil and we maintain pressure with a PCV that supplies 50# steam to the coils on the inlet side.  We have issues with water hammer (mostly steam collapse) in the coils and this has been ongoing for quite sometime.  The condensate lines have been re-designed a few times but the issues with steam collapse still occur.  I believe we are creating a vacuum inside the coils which does not allow the condensate to drain properly.

The point of all of this is, we have many people here that want to decommission the steam coils and install side arm heat exchangers or install pumps to supply ammonia to the plants.  I want to know what others have seen and how they manage their ammonia storage and ammonia distribution.

A drawing of some sort might get you some hints. We need to see coil arrangement, controls, and condensate piping (isometric). Have you considered enlisting the services of a professional?
