Matlab (as other commercial and free tools, see Python as example) includes powerful procedures for optimization, data regression etc.
with these tools users can deal with problems not easily managed by general purpose routines available in process simulators,
I use regularly these tools in union with a process library (Prode Properties) but you can link with other simulators as well,
for applications such as process optimization (separations, transport) etc. etc.

Still I couldn't understand it's purpose
