When we need to use Nitrogen blanketing for refinery storage tanks? When we need to use Internal floating roof for storage tanks? How to choose correct roof for tanks?

Is there any standards or calculation?

In general, if air would cause product degradation or a flammable vapor in the tank, then you want to exclude air. Nitrogen blanket can do this, but sometimes results in unwanted emissions from the tank. Internal floating roof tanks have fewer emissions since there is not as much liquid surface area exposed to the vapor phase. Tank design choice is based on experience and preference. Usually more than one type of tank design would be acceptable.

Inert of internal floating roof tank is not an easy thing. 

1. there are many internal parts that liquid could infiltrate.

2. if the floating deck leaks, that liquid could fill into floating deck. These liquid could evaporate during inert and maintenance, which cause a lot of incidents.

 

So be careful when you inert and do maintenance with internal floating roof tanks.
