Search the internet for 'water hammer calculation' to see what is available. For short lengths, detailed calcs are not usual. Good engineering practice during design avoids most problems. Avoid slug flow when possible and support the piping. Avoid long straight lengths of two-phase flow. In plant, the cost adder is not great. For discovered plant problems, the solution again does not require too detailed calcs when the obvious change for example is just a slower valve closing or addition of a pulsation dampener.
