Slam Shut Valve For Liquid Service

Hi,

 

I was reviewing a FEED package for a Crude Oil Pipeline Project and I noticed the FEED Contractor used a Slam-Shut-Valve (a self actuated valve) to act as a safety isolation valve during either of HH or LL Pressure emergency. This valve was located close to the arrival point along the pipeline.

The justification provided was that, the arrival location is remote and there is no actuation source (IA, hydraulic, electric) available to have considered a conventional ESDV.

 

According to my research, Slam-Shut-Valves are typically used for gas service (Fisher, GE etc).

Even though I am still researching, I haven't come across any of it that is stated for liquid service.

 

The quick valve closing time (usually <2 seconds) associated with SSVs, gets me worried about Hydraulic Shock (water hammer). Studies around this phenomenon (water hammer) wasn't earlier conducted and neither was its mitigation considered.

 

Please can anyone share more experience with this type of valve, and are my concerns about it valid?

Seems not the valve to use. Contractor must be inexperienced. You should call this to their attention.

As suggested by Bobby you need to flag this issue. Also one needs to carry out the surge analysis study for the pipe line. If this is carried out, then the closing time of the valve will definitely be questioned.

Hi,

 

As slam shut valve can create a surge in liquid services by quick closing, cannot be applied in liquid services and its application is limited to the gas services with no surge concern...

Thank you Chemitofreak, fallah.

 

I have flagged this concern with my team and they saw reason to it. (Pressure surge estimation got up to 374.68 barg while the pipe's MAWP is 102 barg).

 

We are currently progressing to replace the Slam-Shut-Valve with conventional ESDV.

 

Due to the distance and the remote location, we are considering placing pressurized Instrument Air bottles, and RTU for signal communication.
