What could make a hydrogen compressor suddenly trip during operation?

If the cause of the trip is not obvious in the monitoring system, I would suspect an electrical circuit problem. Perhaps someone pushed the wrong button, corrosion in the wiring or switches, animals living in unexpected places, component malfunction, etc.

Threshold (safety interlock) reached during operation thus  check safety matrix ; malfunction of equipment ( sensor , wiring,..); wrong operation ,

Check the list of alarms during the event.
