I'm a new engineer first year out of college. I'm trying to solve an issue and my direct supervisor is not accessible to assist till later next week.

I have a liquid level gauge/gauge glass that are too large for the vessel they are intended to be used for. Both pieces, the vessel and the level gauge are both already on site.

The level gauge is 36" center to center and it should only be 18". To use the current 36" gauge we would be running pipe through vessel skid and about 1-2" of the bottom of the level gauge would be underground :/

Can the gauge glass be trimmed to accommodate the shorter length?

Are there any other solutions aside from re-ordering or blind flanging the connections and going without the level gauge?

Thanks for your help,

Engineer with a problem

You can connect the gauge glass bottom connection to the vessel at the same level as the bottom connection on the vessel. Thus, the top of the gauge glass will extend above the top connection. As long as the level is below the top nozzle on the vessel, the measurement will be accurate. When the level goes above the top  vessel nozzle, you can no longer read the level. But, this is also the case with the 18" gauge.

What's the rush? A gauge glass should be easy to obtain.

Hi,

Is the vessel operating pressurized (pressure vessel) or atmospheric?

Sorry,

The level gage is measuring the oil water interface level in a heater treater.

The vessel is pressurized so the gauge glass will need to connect to the gage valves at both vessel connections.

Checking with the vendor now to see if ordering new gage glass will make the deadline.

Then you should order a new gauge glass to fit the connections on the vessel...

Absolutely! Get the correct gauge. Your query was quite misleading. My recommended hookup would be a problem. And yours would , too.
