Tankage Operation

I'm writing to inquire about tankage operation with respect to pumping in and out. I heard many times from operation that a tank is either loaded (recieving) or unloaded (emptying) i.e. it cannot be both at the same time.
Other than quality checks of the product, are there other reasons for this (e.g. product losses, breathing issues,...etc.)?

Hi,
Do you have meters in place, level transmitter on tank , possibility to add level switches to prevent over filling and to prevent the pump to run dry using interlocks?
If the answer is yes , I don't see problems except for the homogeneity of the blend.

Hi,

Yes, we have all the control and safety loops in place.

My query in other words is: what are the consequences if the tank is operated in such a way it is loaded and unloaded simultaneously? and is this prohibited or not recommended by a certain standard or best practice?

Hi,
By "Tankage" if you mean the storage tanks in "storage area" including large volume atmospheric and low pressure (or even pressurized spherical) storage tanks; yes as the "Storage" implies it's not common having simultaneous loading and unloading especially when we see in most cases the rates of loading and unloading are different.
If you need having permanent and simultaneous loading and unloading with different rates, considering a surge drum sized for handling the rates difference and inlet/outlet flow fluctuations could be adequate and no need to have such large storage tanks...
