As a Chemical engineer who has commissioning background , I would suggest you to read all operating manual, commissioning procedure documents, interlock descriptions, P&ID of the project and Datasheet of equipments etc; that has been assign to you by your organization. Also go through previously made Commissioning report , HAZOP study documents etc.
Try to gather good knowledge about how Process design engineers of your organization who are designing process units,. It is time taking, but keep good relationship with them as well as Instrumentation, Mechanical and Electrical engineers to gain basic knowledge about their work domain.
Get ready to be involved in every work in pre-commissioning & commissioning activities, and do commissioning as many unit as you can. Commissioning is one of the best job profile for a process engineer imo.
Some of books that may help you are :
1. Working Guide to Process Equipment by Norman Lieberman.
2. Chemical Process Engineering V A Kayode Coker
3. Process Engineering and Design Using Visual basic (you dont need to learn Visual basic part at all, just go through the theory part) (Very good book for quick referance)
4. Introduction To Process Engineering And Design by Thakore, Bhatt (handy book also not so expensive)
5. Yaws' Handbook of Thermodynamic (useful for thermo-physical properties calculation )
Other book:
6. Compression Machinery for Oil and Gas by Klaus Brun Rainer Kurz
7. Working Guide to Pump and Pumping Stations Calculations and Simulations etc.
8. A Practical Guide to Piping and Valves for the Oil and Gas Industry.
Go through design, commissioning practice documents/standards of some well known Oil and gas companies (ECP and licensors) (they are available, see if you can find them
).
Get basic knowledge of Unisim, Aspen etc . Excel is your lifetime companion.
All the best for your job role (Commissioning engineer profile is great and your love it)
