Hello Chemical Engineering Professionals, Recently I completed my 2 year military service, and I found myself struggling to recall much about Chemical Engineering. What Advice can you offer on what should I revise/ self learn to get back on track? Last month I finished Single Variable Calculus. Should I finish with all the calculus courses move into Physics before moving into the fundamentals of Chemical Engineering.

Thank you

Start your job search. No need to delay.

Definitely, I am currently doing a job search for process/operation Engineering roles, but I have not yet had the opportunity to land a position the market is quite saturated with experienced engineers I thought in the mean time I would self-learn the fundamentals to better prepare myself for future opportunities.

Do you have any preference for your location? There are always needs in the middle east.

I have no specific preferences. I am eager and willing to learn wherever my fate shall send me. I tried searching for jobs in the middle east but unfortunately they require prior experience in the field.

Hi,

Try to find a job asap and if you need some refreshment use any search engine to support you. If you have the basics on Chemical engineering, it won't take long to get qualified on the paper. For field experience it's another story, you need to be able to confront yourself to equipment.

Good luck in your career.

I agree with the advice to get a job and start working as a chemical engineer. Every engineer I know learns on the job. Most chemical engineers I know rarely if ever use their college calculus or physics and many seem to not remember their engineering courses either!

If it were me and I needed refresher to get confidence, I would start with something similar to the book "Chemical Engineering for Non-Chemical Engineers" by Hipple. See if your library can get a copy for you as the book is a bit pricey. From the book's preface: "This book is not intended to be an academic textbook in chemical engineering with detailed equations and complicated mathematical models (there are many excellent ones already available), but to be a layperson’s text on what chemical engineering is, its basic principles, and provide simple examples of how these principles can be used to estimate and do rough calculations for industrial equipment and applications."

You really should spend all your time searching for a job. And contact everyone you know. Including classmates. And family. And get some professional help with your resume. That is the only thing that gets you in the door unless you have a recommendation. But you need to concentrate on a geographic area. Houston is always a good place to look. If you tell us where you are located and where you got your degree, that might get some ideas for you.

Hi,

Bobby is spot on!

Don't forget to contact your Uni or Engineering school, they may have Jobs' offers and or may provide a recommendation letter to support your research. You may also want to contact places where you did internships, not sure this is mandatory in your country.

Good luck

With 2 years military experience, and, I'm guessing, a BSCHE degree (is that right?), there should be a big demand for your services.  With a degree, were you an officer in the military?  If so, that makes you more valuable.  Your IP address indicates Egypt, but your profile says UK.  Is the UK your target job area?  You are already in/near the Middle East which is a high demand area for ChE's.  My advice is get a decent ChE job as soon as you can, and start proving yourself.  If it's not your dream job, no worries.  It's easier to get a job, especially a better job, if you have a job, i.e. are employed.  Plus, as you work, develop your network and build the list of folks who can/will recommend you in the future.

Thank you all for your help. I am actively applying, sending emails to HR  and reaching out to my existing network to expand on my opportunities. Yes I hold a bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering. I served as a soldier in the military for two years, during which I performed mundane non-technical tasks. While I have noticed many opportunities in the gulf region unfortunately they require experience in the field which I don't have. In Egypt where I live its not any different and the job opportunities one can land are in supply chain and as sales engineers. I am not sure why it says UK. I am committed to finding a job as a Process/Operation Engineer.
