Can anyone please explain me in detail , how do we fix the diameter  of the vertical and horizontal separator (either two phase or three phase). I can understand that the length is based on the residence time , but how to find the ID of a separator ? I know that L/D ratio we need to check, but i could not understand by using L/D ratio  how to fix the exact ID for a separator (either two phase (or) three  phase)(either vertical or horizontal).

Have you chosen the design?  If so, you should know the separation factor (Kv) for the chosen design.  With Kv, a design margin, and your design mass flows, you should easily find a minimum diameter.  Then round up to the next standard diameter, and with a target L/D (for an economical vessel design) size the rest of the vessel.  Of course, there may be some recycle to optimize it.

You can visit my website and use software there. Horizontal separator sizing is available with the link from the home page. The important variables are displayed so you can see the effect of changes you make. But you still need to read the references to understand the basis for sizing. Attached is some good information.
