I want to calculate required cooling water utility temperature to condense acetic acid at 10 torr. I have boiling point of acetic acid at 760mmHg is 118degc and at 10 torr (-29degc).  How can we calculate the utility temp?

Hi,

The boiling point of CH3COOH is + 29C @ 10 torrs.

You will need chilled water, let say about 5C, unless you get other source of cold-water year long.

sir we don't have the chilled water. we have cooling water supply so at what utility temp vapor will condensed?

how can we calculate?

sir Isobornyl Acetate(IBA) has boiling point 220degc @760mmHg and @10 torr BP is 88degc when heat of vaporization is 48.54.then how can we calculate the utility temp at 10 torr.

Hi,

Can you change the pressure on your system to cope with the temperature of the cooling water?  The temperature of the process at a given pressure should be the maximum temperature of the cooling water + let say 5 to 7 C.

If not possible, you have to consider investing in a chilled water unit.

When I was in activity, I had a process where we recovered Acetic acid in a still pot under vacuum and the cooling was done using Cooling Water. This was in Thailand where temp in summer is also hot.

Good luck

sir can all the products having boiling point 88-90 degc at 10 torr gets condensed with chilled water supply like 7-10 degc?

i have gone through your answer about acetic acid. but i don't have the chilled water. I have only cooling water.

if i provide chilled water to products having BP 88-90 degc @ 10 torr, will all get condensed?

Hi,

I think you did not get my point, the utility should enter your HX at a temperature below the temperature of the condensed product to avoid temperature cross.

If you have a product with a BP of 88 C @ 10 torrs , you have no issue using cooling water , even in INDIA during summer season .

Good luck

Any specific reason to maintain 10 torr pressure? if possible, you may decide the pressure value which allows you to condense with available cooling water temperature, or else use chilled water. It's simple.
