Hello everyone!

Im trying to define the diameter of the intet and outlet pipes for a glycerin tank.

The fluid is glycerin at 50 C with a capacity of 4.7 m3.

This storage tank is only for the replacement of glycerin in ethanol production if anything occurred, because we recycle all the glycerin we need for the process.(this is for a simulation not a real process)

I was looking for some recommended velocity of viscous liquids but i cant find that information anywhere.

What considerations should be taken for this calculations?

Thanks in advance

I think you would be better served by looking for reasonable pressure drops with the equipment you plan on using.

If the system involve pumping, then the optimum diameter is the one which reduces the required pumping power and the piping installation cost. That optimum diameter dictates the velocity.

Try 2-3 feet/second.

What considerations should be taken for this calculations?

Peters Timmerhaus Plant Design and Economics for Chemical Engineers 5th ed. chap. 9 para. "Economic Pipe Diameter"

Norsok P001 para. 6

Note that there are many criteria of velocity range: vibration, erosion, settling etc.
