Dear All,

I have a question related to requirement of installing flame monitoring system in the furnaces.

If TDL analyser of methane content in flue gas is provided at the furnace bridgewall, can it be treated as enough protection (of course next to  control of firing by field Operators) against extensive methane concentration in the combustion chamber during furnace start up (caused e.g. by lack of the flame)?  And would it be used instead of flame monitoring system?

With such a scheme, the furnace would be at higher risk of rapid unscheduled disassembly.

Check the regulation in your country and consult the fire brigade.

Depends on heater design. See EN 746 for details.

 

And would it be used instead of flame monitoring system?

Negative as flame failure is the only allowed controllable parameter of >70kW burners as per standard above.

EN 746-2 describe requirements for the use of flame detectors and it  allows inspection of the furnace during start up to 750°C only by the Operator if he is able to take immediate corrective action if there are any problems with the flame. In our case Operator is able to do it, so in my opinion flame detectors are not needed. But we have discussion if TDL methane analyser can be treated as equivalent protection during start up.

Why do you think that? Can you provide more details?

I did not catch the point.

You have asked if ex-components are allowed to be used instead of flame detection during purging procedure. Answer is - no, as EN 746-2 allows only flame failure as a controllable parameter.

If this is incorrect please provide a quote to para. EN 746-2 you have been guided by.
