Can anyone explain how the addition of water to crude methanol facilitate easier removal of light ends (separation)?
I'm researching this but still unclear on it, thanks

Hello,
Light ends can be separated from methanol through fractional distillation column. Adding water in crude methanol forms a separate layer due to density differences. Light would dissolve faster in water than in methanol so they can be separated with the water layer.
Hope this helps.
Thanks

Adding some water to methanol reduces the corrosion potential for some metals.
