Hi,
I was hoping someone could help me with an equation to calculate how much work a vacuum pump would use when operating on a column with a volume of 7.1m3.
Thanks

It's the same equation used for a compressor. Search here or Google it..

First determine the flow rate. As the pressure is reduced, the liquid boils at lower temperature. Account for air leakage into the system. Even though you don't want leaks, air will get in somewhere and your pump will have to handle it. Condensing as much vapor as practical will reduce the load on the vacuum pump.

You should start by modeling the vacuum recipient. The amount of gas entering a vacuum pump depends on the design of the vacuumized system, including:
- the decomposition rate of the fluid at the hottest point
- air leak (amount, type and conditions of fittings, packing, and similar)
- the vacuum depth
