Hello everyone,

Im trying to solve the mass and energy balances of washing process. The problem comes when I get the raw data (saline slag from secondary aluminum production), i got It in oxides form: 21,3%w Al2O3
18,9%w Na2O
19,8%w K2O
33,9%w Cl
The rest are impurities or irrelevant compounds
Paper also give the mineralogical phases detected by PXRD (Powder X-Ray Diffraction) as corundum alpha-Al2O3, Spinel MgAl2O4, Halite NaCl, Sylvite KCl and AlN.
How can i compute the oxides percentajes to obtain the mineral percentajes. I want to operate using mineral percentajes. Keeping in mind that the oxide Al2O3 encompasses corundum and AlN (dont know how to compute It)
Im not asking lazyly to someone who solve It for me, references or books that i can check in the web would be very useful and also explanations or tips.

Find attached paper capture where explains the raw material (mineral mix) analysis and tests.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I will do the calculation based on 100 grams of slags.

a) collect all the relevant data (molecular weight element, oxide)

B) calculate the number of moles of oxide (mass oxide/molecular weight)

c) from the number of moles oxide calculate the number of moles of each element (Al =Al2O3*2)

d) from the number of mol of ech element get the corresponding mass of each element, add to them the mass of CL.

e) Calculate the % mass for each element

My 2 cents

Hello Breizh,

First of all, thank you for taking the time to read my post and work on the balance mass. I will consider continue the balances as you propose. One of the problems that im facing is when i use a washing unit in my PFD to dissolve the NaCl, KCl and vent the NH3 (formed by AlN + 3·H2O -> NH3 + Al(OH)3), i dont know how to compute the balances via elements instead of mineral phases (as i mentioned, theres corundum, spinel, halite, sylvite and AlN as mineralogical phases).
Wouldn't be easier solve the balances using the %w of the mineralogical phases? Is it possible to obtain the %w of mineralogical phases through the %w of the oxides provided?. Im not sure if im just making myself a mess or is available option.

Thanks for your time! Really apreciate it
