Hi all,

I know that generally water hammer studies for piping is usually done in PIPENET or OLGA software. My question is is it possible to do a water hammer study using HYSYS dynamics? My thoughts are that it is possible, but then I'm curious what are the pros and cons of using more industry standard software such as PIPENET instead of HYSYS.

Really appreciate any feedback on this.

Thanks

Try PIPENET is more accurate for water hammer, Olga is an expensive software,, but it is used by the engineering companies

My question is is it possible to do a water hammer study using HYSYS dynamics?

No. The piping module in Hysys do not handle acceleration loss and momentum balance, the latter is the key to predicting surge.

Hysys Hydraulics claims to support it and it seems to show surge when I did a model myself, but it does not support column separation (vapor formation inside the pipe due to pressure going below vapor pressure), which is another important aspect of this study.

Use PipeNet. It supports proper surge study and I have used it personally myself in my previous projects.

If you have access to SPS, then it's better.
