Good day to all of you experienced senior engineers,
I am a university student. I am doing distillation column design to separate components including glycerol, methanol, and water. My assumptions include 99.5% methanol is in distillate, 95% water in bottom, and glycerol purity is 82%.There will be a live steam enter the packed column for separation and will go to distillation process in tray column. And the feed (gly water+methanol) enter in liquid form on top of packed column.
Based on my limited knowledge, tower packings (either random or structured) are more suitable for column as they inherently produce lower pressure drop than fractionating trays.
I have been looking for references both online and offline but up until now there is very little information concerning this type of arrangement. I am confused by several reasons:
ii) How will this affect (hybrid Packed and Tray Column) the entire calculation in determining column specs (e.g. height, diameter, etc)
iii) Are there concrete justifications for this?
iv) How we design the column and calculate for the optimization to reduce methanol in bottom distillate?
I will gladly provide further information for your convenience later.
Thank you very much,

Read the guidelines, please. Do not double/cross post. As a student, please stay in the student forum.

Hi,
Agree with Latexman. You should post in the student forum.
Consider this reference, check with your Uni whether they can order the document in reference underneath:
