Hello everyone,

I would like to understand how to convert packing height into an equivalent number of theoretical trays, and vice versa (i.e., number of trays to packing height).

This is for an amine plant I am currently working on, and I am trying to evaluate which option would result in a more optimized design—trays or packing.

I would appreciate any guidance or references on this topic.

Hi,

To answer your question, you need to calculate the HETP (height equivalent to theoretical plate) to convert the number of trays to packing height and vice versa.

Data are available from vendors. Consider the document attached.

Packings(structured) are not suitable for dirty or viscous products.

What’s the estimated diameter? Smaller diameters tend to be packing due to lack of space for installation and maintenance of trays.
