I have 8-10% Acetic acid concentration in Effluent & would like to recoverit economically.
During my literature search I found that higher organic phosphene oxide molecules in some solvent are very good for the selectivity in Liquid Liquid extraction system. One such extractant is trioctyl phosphene oxide with a selectivity of 6 towards acetic acid with very low solubility in water.

Can Anyone suggest any better solution for this problem where operating cost is further reduced based on your actual experience. I am sure many people are recovering acetic acid from effluent

Dear Bhaskaran
I have found it in literature also but when I did practical test it was 100% disappointing to me. Also learned that do not believe literature with blind eyes........This is Chemistry.

However looking for some other solvent..........

Anyway, Was it from your experience or just a literature guess???
Bcoz in Pharma U must be handling many solvents.

ISOBUTYL ACETATE is suitable for separation of acetic acid

Do you have any experience using isobutyl acetate for this service.
If yes can u sahre some rough numbers to have an idea to begin with.

Pawan,
You may try MDC and Chloroform.
Also adding some NacL in feed (water + acid) helps in splitting.

Hi
Ethyl acetate and probably isopropyl ether will work .

Isobutylacetate and ethyl acetate are two choices used in azeotropic distillation but I do not know if LLE will be benificial. Acetic acid purification is typically expensive. Azeotropic distillation is an option usign the above solvent.

Chien, I.L., Zeng, K.L., Chao, H.Y., Hong Liu, J., Design and control of acetic acid dehydration system via heterogeneous azeotropic distillation, Chemical Engineering Science, 59, p.4547-4567, (2004).
