My training project is to create a batch distillation column for separation of acetonitrile and water to 99.5% purity from a 98% pure solution.

It forms an azeotrope.

B.P of acetonitrile is 82*C.

Distillation is batch not fractional.

I checked lots of books...not much help.

Also i googled the topic a lot, no success there also.

Please help me!

Does anyone have any ebook/project-report related to this ?

I checked Perry's handbook too, not much info abt this process.

If anyone can help me with my project, i'll be very thankfull.

Dear preetinder,
Since Acetonitrile & water forms azeotrope at 76.c ( Composition :84% ACN & 16% Water14%) it is difficult to seperate without entrainer.
Two things u can do for this seperation:
i)Add third component cyclohexane in kettle u will get pure ACN.
ii)Pretreat the ML with MDC to remove water in extraction column & then go for distillation u will get pure ACN.

Thanks a lot...

Please elaborate in details.
And do you have any ebook/notes related to this ?

I tried Perry's chemical handbook..but couldn't find anything related to this type of problem.
