Hi All,

Designing a steam condenser to condense 30 tph, 3.5 bara steam (excess steam being vented). Condensate meant for BFW make up. Is it ok to use only coooling water or a combination of condenser cooler using air cooling and water cooling? What condensate temperature should I aim for? If I consider more than 100 deg which is required for deaerator, atmospheric storage tank will not be sufficient. Any experience based tips?

Thanks in advance.

If your cooling water system is available and sufficient, i would go for water cooled system to save space. Air cooled is simple but it is bulky, required structure, etc.

I have seen deaerator designed to pressure vessel but not for storage tank. the operating pressure is elevated to avoid excessive condensate flashing in deaerator.

Thanks Jo,
Actually the scheme is to condense steam and store in a surge tank from where it will be pumped to deaerator or alternatively to DMW storage.

Since it is send to DMW tank, the operating temperating would properly limited by tank. Check with your Mechanical engineer who is taking care of tank design, the maximum temperature it can go up (e.g. 80-90 degC) and derate the maximum temperature accordingly. In the deaerator, you may consider to use extra steam for heating and stripping purpose. This option is not energy effective.

OR

may consider 2 stage condensing/cooling where 1st stage to temperature good for deaerator and 2nd stage extra cooling before feeding to DMW tank.
