Dear rsk,

Sizing of an orifice plate is a trade off between delta P and orifice diameter along with flow. If this plate is used for flow mesurement and there's a desired delta P across it, then you put all the data in a standard orifice meter equation and get the size. If it is a restriction orifice, which is put many times in a mini flow line of a pump, You should fix the minimum flow to be the flow through the orifice and calculate the delta P to be (pump discharge pressure-system pressure), (where miniflow line joins) the other variable left being the orifice diameter. There are many softwares to calculate orifice diameter. Fix the desired diameter by trial and error. One such is shown in efunda.com.
