Hello All,

I am a junior engineer, relatively new to the industry. I am learning diagnostics for compressors and trying to figure out the possible signs and symptoms of surge in centrifugal compressors.

Can somebody please describe the symptoms or what to look for when diagnosing surge or even the conditions that may indicate compressor surge is expected?

Thanks,
ASA

ASA,

it depends on what inputs are tied to the surge controller. Generally, compressor surge controllers have pressure, temperature and flow inputs. Deviation in any of these variables takes the compressor towrds surge condition. Surge is the condition where the compressor suction fluid condition is insufficient for efficient compressor operation. A low suction pressure and flow has the potential to starve the compressor and this is not desirable especially for constant speed machines. On the other hand, a high suction temperature will have a negative effect on compressibility, resulting in excessive discharge temperature. Therefore, surge is the condition introduced by these process variable deviations. Due to this surge condition, the compressor generates an unusual noise, which, if allowed, can result in damage to the impeller and working parts of the compressor. This just a practical explanation of what surge is.....I don't know if I did a good job.

Dear,
Here is the link where you will find the same thread. The posting will really help you to understand the concept of the Compressor-Surge.

You can search by the same words in the forums and you will find more links here at Cheresources.
Have a nice time.
