Hi All,
Recently, my double acting reciprocating air compressor was down mad.gif . Upon dismantling, it is found that the carbon piston rings as well as the guide rings were broken. Further I have found some rusts at the cross head. Thus I suspect there are water leakage from the cooling water passage to the compression chamber through the gasket of the cylinder head.
My question is, what is the effect if there is water present in the compression chamber? I am thinking that it may have some effect since water is incompressible.
Really appreciate your opinion on this.

How much pressure the compressor is building? Water can go from CW jacket to the compression chamber only if having higher pressure then air inside chamber.
I have come across problem with laoding valves of recip compressor operated on NG and that was due to water coming with Natural gas

It is a 2-stage compressor.
1st stage builds 2 bar, 2nd stage compresses from 2 to 6 bar.
I suspected water pass through due to damaged gasket, or improper torque applied at the head cover.
