Hi, I'm currently looking at some possibilities for repacking a Koch-Otto York Desmister for our Dry Tower of a sulfuric acid plant. The Demister as designed is constructed of Koch's Alloy 66 mesh with an alloy 20.
I am looking for suggestions as to alternative materials to alloy 66--its very expensive right now, and we aren't sure if we are getting the supposed extended life with the alloy 66 (The last few repackings/replacments have been in March 04, March 03, and September 00).
Basically I'm looking for a more cost-effective solution that won't get anihilated by the highly corrosive conditions in the tower...any ideas?

Michael:
I really have no experience at all with demisting in a sulfuric acid plant, but I think it might be worth looking into ceramic or plastic packing as a substitiute for your metallic packing.

Milton is exactly right. Unless there is an unusally high temperature problem, a good plastic mesh pad (Kynar, PVDF) would be worth while looking into.

Dear all,
I came across this question while surfing this forum. Although it is very old question and might have got resolved. Still I am contributing my experience as it may be useful for next generation.
What you have specified is a metal only DEMISTER mist eliminator. You can use a high efficiency co-knit mist eliminator. Co-knit mist eliminator contains two types of wires, one is metallic and the another is polymer fiber like PTFE. These two wires are knitted together to form a co-knit. The PTFE fiber is supported by the metal wire since the PTFE fiber is too weak to stand alone. Due to fine size of PTFE fiber (200 to 400 Danier) the smaller droplets are also caught by the co-knit mist eliminator.
Now since the metal content is reduced you can save on cost but the collection efficiency is greatly enhanced.
Regards.

... however PTFE is not very cheap either... but the benefit can be that its prospective life cycle at harsh evironment (i.e. sulfuric acid) is longer

The answer to this problem is use of a material called SX, it is a Silicon Alloy that can withstand very high temperatures however yet has very low corrosion against Sulphuric Acid.
I have seen many of these demisters installed in Drying Towers and have worked very well.
