i just wanted to ask about the specifications, industrially, a designed flash drum.. because i had design design a flash drum.. here are the info of my design.

a) vertical flash drum, vap frac = 0.3, volume flow = 514 m3/hr, with P = 145 barg, T = 250 C. and the L = 16.9 m and D = 2.89 m and thickness = 24 cm

horizontal flash drum, vap frac = 0.1, vol flow = 455941 m3/hr, with P =0.15 kpa, T = 18 C, L = 35 m and D = 10 m.

the questions..
a) is my design are industrially valid.. bcos it seems that the L are look really big..
what are the specifications and rule or limit to a flash design.

What design criteria have you applied to size the drum?

I've seen questions raised in this forum more than once on drum design (I've even offered up some comment myself). Have you done a search to see what wisdom you can glean from recorded history? Please do that first or try again.

What do your student reference texts offer for guidance?

Please post up your calculations so that you can get meaningful review. I've also offered some thoughts in the forum on setting out calcs (again do a search). Logical representation of your ideas is crucial to achieving meaningful peer review. If you make it hard for the reviewer to understand what's going on, you are destined to struggle or worse fail.

The data that you have posted here is not that helpful because you haven't included physical property data, so there is not enough information to answer your question (well done for trying though - often, there's not even a flowrate quoted). This indicates to me that you need to go back to some fundamental theory. Gas / liquid separation revolves around a momentum balance so phase density and velocity are crucial to the analysis.

Assuming that you're determining vessel wall thickness, what is the pressure / temperature basis that you've quoted? Do these conditions represent operation or are they for mechanical design? I'm used to setting mechanical design at some margin away from the maximum/minimum expected operating conditions. How large this margin is depends on various factors based on the situation (again, if you do a search of the forum you might find some useful guidance. I'll leave this activity to you as it's good experience).
