im a chemical engineer and under training on a Fertilizer plant in their utilities section

treatment of colling water( water being cooled by cooling towers) agaist corrion is being done by zn-cr . now my company is shifting towards phosphate based system.

i have few questions if anybody like to answer

- Plant is old. installed in early 1970s. underground piping has been subjected to normal wear and tear and for nearly 38 years chromate is being used now turing to phosphate based system - what major problems can we possibly face?

- i have studied that phosphate based systems work in alkaline range of ph .. but biocides being used is choline which is acidic ..

- cooling towers are very close to ammunia plant i-e almost 45-50 meter operating in alkaline range will mean more ammonia in water and more biological fouling . and i have heard that high concentrations of ammunia in water advesly effect the phosphate based systems .... can anybody plz shed some light on above mentioned points

------------
secondly i will be very thankful if anybody can provide any web link or some useful literature about phosphate treatment im doing a lot of google but not able to find much useful stuff

Hello ,
Why not asking your query to cooling water treatment companies like GE BETZ , NALCO or BUCKMAN ?

As an example pay attention on where to discharge the blowdown , you may have regulation in term of phosphate content , .....

Most of the treatment using Phosphate are working at free pH and Chock of Biocide should not be a problem .

Hope it helps
